Incision Options for Breast Enlargement

  • Inframammary – The incision is placed along the lower breast crease.
  • Periareolar – The incision is created around the outer border of the areola.
  • Transaxillary – The incision is located in the armpit.

While some women are pleased with the size and shape of their breasts, many women would like an improvement. To achieve voluminous breasts with a more aesthetically pleasing shape, breast enlargement with implants can be performed. Each patient has a unique vision of what her ideal breasts would look like and each person has a unique anatomy. Treatment is tailored to each patient individually. During your complimentary consultation with Dr.Kalsow, you can try out different size implants to choose the one which fits your body the best.

Options in breast augmentation

Silicone vs saline: silicone feels more natural but is more expensive. Silicone implants are most often used currently. Saline if you are under 22 years of age.

Under muscle or over muscle: preferred position is under the muscle, or dual plane (if muscle edge is freed up a little more over the muscle). If implants are placed under the muscle there is less complications that can occur.

Incision under breast or under the nipple: incision under the breast is preferred because the rate of capsular contracture is smaller. However, if someone needs a lift at the same time, where there is already an incision around the areola, then the implants can be placed through that incision.

Size of implant: In the office you can try out different size sample implants under your bra and see which size you like the best. Whatever size you choose, I recommend going a little higher. Each 150cc of volume adds about a cup of breast size.

Recovery After Breast Enlargement

Options in breast augmentation

Immediately: you will leave the surgery with a bra, with some pain medications.  You will go home the same day.  You will be able to use your hands, but your chest will be sore next few days.

1 week:  in one week you will most likely get back to your normal activities.  You will come in for your first follow up.   There will be no stitches to take out because all stitches are inside the body and dissolvable.  Your breasts might appear high and swollen.  The will descend into the right position over the next few months.

3 weeks: you are back at your normal activity.  Your breasts might still feel high, it takes a few months for them to descend.  One breast might also feel bigger then the other.  That is because the descend at different rates.

6 months:  this will be close to your final result.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will my breasts look unnatural and fake?

The skinnier the patient and the larger the implant that is used, the less natural the implant would look.  But one has to really push to the limit of implant size for a specific body type for it to look un natural.  Some women prefer a little fullness on the top, some prefer a more natural appearance.  Your goals will be discussed prior to the surgery and your implant will be tailored for your body and your desires.

How long do I wear the bra?

You can wear a surgical bra for comfort for a few days, but then you do not need to wear a bra anymore.  If you do choose to wear one, it should not have a wire.

Does insurance cover breast augmentation?

If it is done for cosmetic reasons, insurance does not cover it.
